Child Seat Installation Checklist


Is your child in the proper seat for his/her weight?
  • Rear facing-As long as possible and at least until 9kg (20lb)
  • Forward facing-Between 9 and 22kg (20-48lbs)
  • Boosters-Child is over 18kg (40lbs)
  • Seat belts-Child is over 36kg(80lb). If the lap belt rides over the abdomen or the shoulder belt sits across the face the child should be seated in a booster seat.
Is your child seat in the back seat of your automobile? Answer must always be yes
About your infant, child or booster seat Does the seat carry a CMVSS label?  

Answer is yes

 

 

Has your seat been recalled? Answer is no. If your seat has been recalled do not use
Are you the original owner of the seat? Answer is yes. If you are not the original owner you do not know if the seat was damaged in an accident in the past.
Has the seat been in a collision? Answer is no. If the seat has been in a collision it may be damaged and not function properly.
Have you read and do you understand the instructions that came with your child seat? Answer must be yes. If you do not know how to properly install your child seat seek professional help to ensure your seat is safe and secure
Check your seat installation Harness Check:
  • Snug fit (no more than one finger-width of space between the harness and the child"s collar bone).
  • Through correct slots
  • Straps lie flat
  • Chest clip is at armpit level. Check each time you use your child seat
  • Some tether and harness straps must be "doubled-back" through strap slides to prevent slipping

 

Tether Check:
  • Is it tight?
  • Is your anchor installed?
  • Some tether and harness straps must be "doubled-back" through strap slides to prevent slipping
UAS If you have a car with a Universal Anchorage System (UAS) have you used the UAS to install your child seat?
Seat Belt Installation Is the seat belt tight (less than 1" of movements of the seat)?

Is your seat belt compatible with your child seat?

Have you used a locking clip or Seat Snug on the seat belt?

Seat Level Is your rear facing seat at a 45 degree angle from the vertical position?
